THE city government intends to collaborate with the City Schools Division of the Department of Education (DepEd) for the operation of five classrooms in a city-owned building at Habitat, Phase 1 in Barangay Indahag.

In his letter to the 18th City Council, Mayor Oscar Moreno said the project intends to enhance and strengthen the quality of early education of the young learners in the area by allowing the DepEd to operate five classrooms in the building for Kindergarten and Grade 1 pupils.

Under the agreement, both parties shall ensure that the school will be compliant with government standards and ensure the safety of the pupils, teachers and the school facilities. Both the city and the DepEd agree to work together to establish strong linkages with stakeholders to address the needs of the school and its pupils.

The responsibility of the city will be to assign security personnel at the building and undertake the necessary repairs and maintenance works on the building and its premises.

For its part, the DepEd shall provide the needed teaching staff and submit regular updates on the progress and development of the school to the city. It shall also shoulder the cost of the water and electric bills.

After discussing the matter thoroughly, the City Council committee on education chaired by Councilor Suzette Magtajas-Daba approved a proposed ordinance granting authority to Mayor Oscar Moreno to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement with the DepEd for the school project.

The agreement has been endorsed to the committee on laws and rules chaired by Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya for appropriate action. (cli)
