During the 18th City Council regular session on Monday, Committee on Ways and Means Chairman and City Councilor George Goking authored a resolution adopting the celebration of the Autism Society Philippines’ Angels Walk for Autism – an annual advocacy event that has been held since 2007.

“Over the last 12 years, it has become the kick-off event of the Philippine National Autism Consciousness Week — an observance made possible by Philippine President Fidel Ramos’ Proclamation 711 of 1996 and the city government should support the program,” he said.

He said aside from supporting the events, the city government should also provide a massive information drive in the barangay level regarding the growing incidence of autism among Filipinos, necessitating more people from different sectors to become aware of this disability;

“We also encourage private companies to hire workers that would represent those being affected,” Goking pointed out.

Under Presidential Decree Number 711, the aim of the Philippine Government to develop awareness of the problems of autistic persons and promote a supportive environment among communities to enable autistic persons to live with dignity and enable them to function independently and contribute productively to society.

He said the growing number of people with autism has spawned the need for early diagnosis, therapy, and education intervention to help them and their families manage the lifelong disability.

He added that under the law, the government recognizes the need to provide greater attention and assistance to the plight of autistic persons and mobilize its various agencies and departments, especially the Department of Health, the Department of Education, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development to look into how they can meaningfully support community-based approaches toward providing early diagnosis, therapy and education intervention to people with autism.
