Oro writers’ group holds writeshop for teachers

AS part of the 2018 National Arts Month and the Panaghugpong 10: Xavier Arts Festival , the Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, in partnership with the Nagkahiusang Magsusulat sa Cagayan de Oro, organize the Ani ng Sining Workshop on Creative Writing at the XCCA Conference Room, 2F Museo de Oro, Xavier University, recently.
The fellows of the workshops were Creative Writing teachers from the Special Program in the Arts (SPA) of the Cagayan de Oro City National High School, Lapasan National High School, and Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School. Panelled by Nagmac members—poet-essayist Alton Melvar Dapanas, poet Ton Daposala, spoken word artist Adeva Jane Esparrago, and fictionist-essayist Abigail C James—the workshops consisted of introductory lectures, prompt-guided writing exercises, pedagogical discussions, and output critiquing on poetry (on page and in performance) and creative nonfiction.
Situationers on the current state of Creative Writing pedagogy was also raised in between these discussions. The Creative Writing teachers cited the need for more teacher trainings, material resources on local literature, detailed modules on strategies, and other concerns on curriculum, instruction, and assessment of literature and creative writing courses in the secondary education.
