Dr. David Mendoza, head of the  Research Epidemiology Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit of the Department of Health (DOH) in Northern Mindanao, yesterday confirmed that worried Singaporean officials opened communication lines with the health department following reports that a 36-year old woman who fell ill here came from Singapore.

The health department tested the woman, and the results showed she had a pulmonary disease, and not the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (Merscov).

Mendoza said they assured the Singaporean government that no one in Cagayan de Oro who worked in Singapore contracted Merscov.

“Nanawag ang Singaporean government kanamo, ug nangutana kon tino-od ba nga na-ay atong pasyente nga gikan sa Singapore nga gitaktboyan sa Merscov. Gi-ingnan namo nga wala,” said Mendoza.

He said the call was made after the sick woman, confined at the stateun Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), tested negative for Merscov based on the laboratory examination of samples conducted by the DOH’s Research Institute for Tropical Medicine.

Mendoza said the woman remains at the NMMC, and is receiving treatment because of her “pulmonary problem.” He did not say exactly what the patient’s sickness was.

He said the Singaporean government’s reaction was expected given that the patient worked as a caregiver in Singapore.

The patient returned to the city on Jan. 31, and was first admitted to Sabal Hospital in Feb. 2. She was subsequently moved to the NMMC after she reportedly vomited blood.

“Sa pag-boto sa maong balita, nabalaka sab ang Singaporean government kay gikan gud sa ilang nasud ang maong pasyente, pero kay  negative man sa Merscov ang maong pasyente, nahupay na ang kabalaka sa Singaporean government,” Mendoza said.
