Lawyer Luciano Cameros, Pacquiao’s legal counsel who also lives in Digos City said the event will serve as appetizer to the coming week-long celebration of the 17th founding anniversary of the city.

The opening of the festivities will be formally opened on Sept. 2 and culminates on Sept. 8.

Cameros said the boxing bouts will be initiated by the Manny Pacquiao promotions in Digos City.

The Games and Amusement Board (GAB) will supervise the event which will be held inside the Digos City Gymnasium along Jose Abad Santos Street, just beside the city hall.

Cameros said it will serve as GAB’s basis to qualify a professional boxer to elevate his current status from 8 to 10 rounder category.

MP promotions boxers will be fighting other professional boxers from Regions 10, 11, and 12 such as Agusan del Sur, Cotabato, and General Santos City.

Aside from the boxing bouts, MP promotions will also field its kick boxers where a total of 12 bouts are expected to entertain those who also love martial arts, Cameros said.

“This event is our gesture of support to the city of Digos on its 17th founding anniversary. We hope that boxing and kick boxing enthusiasts will be there in the gym to see for themselves the future generation of boxers in this country,” Cameros said.

Mayor Joseph Peñas said the boxing and kick boxing tournament set a day before the formal opening of the 17th founding anniversary of Digos City will add more color to the festivities.

“It’s a welcome development. The sports activities will help us promote Digos City to our neighboring places. We are very thankful to the organizers and most especially to Senator Manny Pacquiao,” Peñas said.
