MANILA — Malacanang on Wednesday welcomed the decision of Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin “Junjun” Binay to leave the city hall after he failed to get temporary restraining order stopping the preventive suspension order issued by the Office of the Ombudsman.

”We welcome the decision of Mayor Junjun Binay to heed the call of (Interior and Local Government) Secretary Mar Roxas for the Rule of Law to prevail,” said Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda in a press statement.

”Indeed, today is a good day for the Rule of Law and there is certainly no place for mob rule in modern civil society,” he added. Meanwhile, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. is hoping Binay’s decision to leave the Makati City Hall will ease tensions and allow the full resumption of operations in the city hall.

“It is important that public officials abide by the rule of law so that reason and order may prevail,” Coloma said. Last Monday, the Office of the Ombudsman issued another suspension order against Binay, this time in connection with the alleged anomalous construction of the Makati Science Building.

Binay initially defied the order by filing a petition for temporary restraining order at the Court of Appeals (CA). However, the son of Vice President Jejomar Binay failed to get TRO from the CA, prompting him to leave the city hall on Wednesday.

Last March, the Ombudsman also issued a preventive suspension order against Binay and other officials of the Makati City government in connection with the alleged overpriced construction of Makati City Hall Building II. (PNA)
