If there’s one thing that I think all of us collectively want to do is to lead a plastic-free lifestyle. No, I’m not talking about fake or plastic people (although of course I’m sure all of us don’t want toxic folks around) but rather, single-use plastic. All of us have witnessed the crazy effects of plastics clogging up sewers. Surely, none of us want another flood or a marine creature dead because it, unfortunately, ate a plastic bag. We all want to be better, more responsible citizens of the planet, right?

However, is it really possible to lead a plastic-free lifestyle? How difficult is it to begin and to maintain that kind of lifestyle? Let’s count the ways.

  1. Say no to bottled water. Ah, I am totally guilty of this. There really are instances when you can’t help but buy one, right? I have started a habit: bring a reusable bottle everywhere. A few years ago, I used to carry a reusable, foldable drinking bag. It was a bit of a chore to keep it clean so I just made things simple and carried a reusable steel water bottle instead. It’s a good investment and can help you save as well.
  2. Use glass containers to store food. A lot of us fall into this trap – we reach for that ziplock, that single-use plastic bag, that plastic lunch box or that plastic takeout container. Let’s make a conscious effort to choose glass containers instead. There are affordable, stackable glass containers available at home and lifestyle stores these days. Aside from the fact that you’re living a “greener” life, you and your family will also lead healthier lives since using glass is way better than using plastic.
  3. Use reusable shopping bags. I personally love the Baggu foldable ones you can see at Ladybag Centrio Mall or at R.O.X. Reusable bags lets me save on those “environmental fees” set by department stores when you use plastic bags. Reusable shopping bags are also very light, easy to store and easy to carry. Did I also mention that these Baggu ones are stylish and colorful? Now if you want to opt for a more affordable option, the age-old bayong or “net bag” from the palengke is always a safe choice!

Earth Day 2018 will be on April 22. Perhaps that’s a great day for all of us to start leading a plastic-free lifestyle. Of course, it won’t be a radical change but perhaps, by starting and by doing our share no matter how small, we can all help reduce plastic litter and pollution and really become the change we all want to see.
