Six years after the floods of the Tropical Storm Sendong, another leg of CDO Poetry Night was held last Saturday at Chingkee Tea along Hayes Street in commemoration of the tragedy. Themed “uwan(g)”—a wordplay of uwan meaning ‘rain’, and uwang meaning ‘howl’—the event featured Kagay-anon poets and writers who are members of writers collective Nagkahiusang Magsusulat sa Cagayan de Oro (Nagmac), some of whom experienced the aftermath of the floods.

Sa kadaghan nang mga delubyo na niagi sa atong nasod—apil na ang Ondoy ug ang Yolanda—usahay gakalimtan na ang Sendong,” said Mai Santillan, CDO Poetry Night host and Nagmac founding chairperson, during the opening.

The organizers aimed to remind all of the tragedy, as a means of protest to this forgetfulness, as well as to reinforce the lessons we have learned from it.

Issue three of the Bulawan Literary Zine of Northern Mindanao, also titled after the disaster, was also released, dedicated to “those who died, those who were never found, and those who lived through it all.”

Started in 2014, CDO Poetry Night is the city’s premier spoken word event organized by Nagmac. The organization aims to develop local writers and contribute to make the literary scene of Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao more socially relevant, with a distinctly local voice. (nagmac)
