POLICE failed to establish strong cases against over half of the people they arrested during the first few hours of the so-called “anti-tambay” campaign in the city.

Of the 82 arrested for violation of City Ordinance 5133-95, a city law against binge drinking in specified public places, only 30 “tambay” face actual cases in court.

Each of those charged in court were allowed to post a P3-thousand bailbond.

The 82 were among the 91 arrested late last week. Nine of them were arrested for offenses unrelated to the city ordinance that strictly regulates binge drinking.

Data provided by Cagayan de Oro City Police Office spokesman Supt. Mardy Hortillosa show that prosecutors only approved the filing of cases in court against 30 of those arrested from late Thursday night to the wee hours of Friday.

Prosecutors outrightly rejected 27 of the complaints due to reasons of technicality.

Data also show the police had to release 17 of the arrested 82 people while five merely received a police reprimand.

Of the 82, only three were handed over to social workers because they are minors.

Hortillosa said Cocpo has started reviewing the implementation of the implementation of the city ordinance.

Prosecutors, he noted, seemed unprepared to prosecute many of the arrested “tambay” for violation of the ordinance.

“Morag nabag-ohan ang mga  fiscal niini nga bala-od, ma-o nang dunay mga panahon nga la-in la-in ang panglantaw sa pulis ug mga prosecutors,” Hortillosa said.

But Hortillosa said Cocpo noted a decrease in the number of “tambay” in the city since the start of the implementation of the “anti-tambay” campaign.

“Among nakita nga effective  gyud kay adtong June 30, usa na lang  ka tawo ang nadakpan in violation sa atong city ordinance,” he said.

Hortillosa said the police here also registered no physical injury case since Thursday night.
