THE rains here since weekend have nothing to do with the storm that may enter Philippine territory today.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the rains experienced in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental were brought by a “localized thunderstorm.”

But expect more rains especially on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday because of the incoming storm. Once it enters the Philippine area, Pagasa will name it “Caloy.”

June Frivaldo, a weather specialist at the Pagasa station in El Salvador City in Misamis Oriental, the storm could enter the Philippine area of responsibility today.

Fivaldo however said the storm may not make a landfall but Mindanao would likely feel its effects.

The storm packs winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gusty winds of 80 kilometers per hour.

Frivaldo said the storm would affect weather conditions in Caraga and northern Mindanao.

Pagasa said the trough of the tropical storm is also expected to bring isolated light rains in northern Luzon.

In a 24-hour forecast, Pagasa said the storm was observed at 1,320 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur at 3 am yesterday.

Pagasa said the regions of eastern Visayas and Caraga would have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms caused by the trough of the storm which may cause floods or landslides due to moderate or at times heavy rains.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains caused by the northeast monsoon. (with reports from pna)
