THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is using ill-conceived reasons for its attempts to prevent Manny Pacquiao from engaging in his projected boxing bout that is scheduled to take place sometime within the election period.

Boxing is Pacquiao’s profession.

If the Comelec is allowed to do that, then, theoretically, it may also be deemed all right for it to ban other famous professionals like doctors, lawyers, or movie stars from doing their work during the election period.

That would be pushing things a little bit too far as it would excuse the Comelec’s exercising arbitrary powers far beyond what the law envisions.

What the Comelec should probably focus on at this time is to ensure that the PCOS machines would work as envisioned to attain clean and honest elections.

If the Comelec is able to do that, then, it would earn the admiration of the people, although, perhaps, it would still a notch lower than their love for Pacquiao’s brawn.

Incidentally, if Pacquiao is to be barred from boxing, it should be because boxing is bad for his health, and for everyone who pursues it as a “sport.”

In my view, any activity that calls for beating, injuring or maiming an opponent can hardly be justified in this time and age as a sport.
