ELC is a youth leadership camp for young leaders from various colleges and universities around the country. It is organized by Kaya Natin Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership and the Seaoil Foundation, in cooperation with the Ateneo School of Government.

The three-day seminar hopes to spread the legacy of the late Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo.

Rep. Robredo said, “All suffer because of corruption.” She said her work in Congress is more about her campaign against graft and corruption. “In fact, my first bill was the full disclosure bill on government transactions,” she said.

On the Freedom of Information, Robredo said she filed her own version, saying, “documents must be ‘user friendly’ because if the people do not know how to use the information it means nothing”.

She is optimistic that some of the provisions that she filed will be incorporated to the final version.

“We hope the bill will be out by October this year,” Robredo said.

Robredo also shared her husband’s life and leadership. According to her, the late Robredo is simple even in the clothes he wore, at home and in the office. His family was his priority. Robredo said her husband’s story is about simplicity and resiliency, the traits, the former Secretary.

As mayor of Naga City, Robredo said her husband made sure that every individual counts, thus people’s participation was institutionalized because everyone belongs to an organization be it for senior citizens, women, youth, farmer, vendor and others.

“It is easier to engage if they belong to an organization,” she recalled what her husband told her.

“When people feel that they are part of the group, consulted and involved in decision making it is easy for us to get their cooperation,” she said.

She also said that the late Robredo was guided with “Kayo Muna, Bago Kami, Sila Muna, Bago Tayo”.

Robredo also told the youth that they must engage and find meaning in what they do. “Get the real purpose of what you are doing because if you don’t find meaning in what you do, it has no more purpose,” she said.

She said, “When you find the meaning, then that is where passion comes in.” Robredo further said that “matino and mahusay” are two indispensable trait of a leader.

When asked by a youth leader from Cotabato about the Bangsamoro Law she replied, “It has to be done not because it is perfect but, it is one great step that we have it and we need to come together and give it a try.” PNA
