REP. Rufus Rodriguez of the city’s 2nd District yesterday said his counterpart in the 1st District, Rep. Rolando Uy, would remain a member of the administration Liberal Party (LP) but would support his mayoral bid.

“Yes, he (Uy) said Liberal Party siya but he did not say he is for (Mayor Oscar) Moreno,” said Rodriguez, taking note that Uy never gives a categorical answer whenever he is asked if he would endorse him (Rodriguez) or Moreno. “And that is because he is for me.”

Uy’s endorsement is seen as a crucial factor in determining the outcome of next year’s mayoral election in the city. Rodriguez also expressed doubt if Uy’s son Rainer Joaquin, a Carmen barangay councilor or any of the congressman’s sons would run for vice mayor under Moreno’s ticket.

Rodriguez said the reason for this is because Uy, supposedly, committed to support his mayoral bid. “Congressman Klarex committed to support me two weeks ago,” said Rodriguez.

He said his group, the Centrist Democratic Party (CDP), has already adopted Uy as its congressional candidate in the city’s 1st District.

Uy was a no-show during the CDP convention in Nazareth last weekend but Rodriguez downplayed this, saying “guest candidates” were not required to join his party’s conventions.
