Rodriguez, who has been banking on the endorsement of Uy for his mayoral bid, was unaware of his 1st District counterpart’s move, adding that he has yet to confirm it at presstime.

Uy filed his certificate of candidacy yesterday morning before his son Rainer Joaquin filed his as the Liberal Party’s candidate for vice mayor. The younger Uy filed his COC together with Mayor Oscar Moreno and LP candidate for 2nd District congressman Edgar Cabanlas before high noon.

In earlier interviews, Rodriguez said he was confident that Uy would support his mayoral bid because the 1st District congressman gave him his word.

Uy, for his part, admitted that he told Rodriguez that he would support the 2nd District congressman’s mayoral bid.

“Huwebes kadtong adlawa  nagka-estorya kami didto sa akong opisina sa Kongreso. Siya man mismo ang mi-adto sa ako human sa iyang pag-diklarar nga mokandidato siya  sa pagka-mayor nia-anang adlaw’ng Domingo,” Uy said.

Uy said his promise to Rodriguez was made in the context of Moreno not running for reelection after the 2nd District congressman’s Sept. 13 declaration that he would run for mayor.

“Wala pa man usab ako makasiguro niadtong panahona kon magpasubli ba si Mayor Moreno sa pagpapili sa pagka mayor. Mao tong akong nasaaran si Congressman Rodriguez,” Uy said.

Uy said he and Moreno met and discussed their political plans after his meeting with Rodriguez. He did not elaborate.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez and other Centrist Democratic Party (CDP) candidates would file their COCs tomorrow after they hear an 8 am mass at the St. Augustine Cathedral.

He said he was looking forward to a “high-level and respectful campaign” without attacks on fellow candidates.
