INDEED the city streets have become narrower each day because of the increasing volume of users especially at this time when the city fiesta is approaching. Cagayan de Oro may also be considered as the shopping capital of Region 10 that the influx of motor vehicles from nearby communities has also expanded what used to be peak or rush hours.

In one of the meetings of event coordinators and sponsors for the coming city fiesta that I was able to attend lately, I raised the concern about fun runs and other street events and suggested that such events that can be staged outside of the main thoroughfares of the city be relocated away from major thoroughfares.

I understand preparations and commitments have already been made so that probably major street events after this fiesta will have to be reconsidered seriously.

For example, fun runs that otherwise would cause the closure of one lane of the highway may be best staged in south diversion road. With this, the use of that part of the road network of city roads may also be promoted and advertised. The sponsors could put up platforms there that will serve as the stage when they do the awarding.

Relocating events away from major city thoroughfares and further regulating the closure of portions of city streets will avoid traffic build up in lateral and connecting city streets that are closed while the street events are going on. We are considering drafting a policy that will govern the use of streets for such events. This way, hopefully runs will continue to be fun.

Many questions have been posed about the traffic light of the city government. One city councilor even went to the extent of saying that it is now the fault of the RTA why the traffic lights project is moving slowly, practically saying that the head of RTA engineering, an electrical engineer, should not meddle with the traffic lights project. He also quoted the contractor as saying that the current administration is demanding that the controllers to be installed in the traffic lanterns should be as approved in the contract, as if saying that it is alright if the terms of the contract were not complied with. The councilor probably forgot that there are specifications in the purchase request that must be followed.

What the RTA is saying is simply the delivery of what the purchase order specifies.
