ALABEL, Sarangani — The Provincial Government of Sarangani, with the cooperation of Sulong Sarangani Madaris for Peace, celebrated recently its 9th Provincial Musabaqah with the theme, “Batang Madaris ng Sarangani, Iba ka Umangat ka” held at the Capitol Grounds here.

This three-day activity involved academic competitions and sports and was participated in by some 2,500 Moro students or the so-called “mulits,” their teachers and facilitators or “ustads” from the different Madaris centers of each of the six municipalities of Sarangani, excluding Malungon.

Musabaqah is a Maguindanao term for Madaris intramurals.

Ustad Abdulbayan Laguialam, Madaris for Peace project manager, believed that the reasons why there were more participants in this year’s Musabaqah compared to last year, are because the children were more excited of the new activities and the availability of free transportation.

Aside from the academics such as the Alphabetical Arrangement, Word Meaning, and Spelling; and sports like basketball, volleyball and Sepak Takraw, this year’s Musabaqah incorporated storytelling, facilitated by the Moro Women Leaders of Sarangani, and choir competition which are also considered highlights of the event.

Before the Provincial Musabaqah was held, each municipality celebrated their Municipal Musabaqah one to two months prior where participants from their municipalities were also their representatives for the Provincial Musabaqah.

During the awarding and closing ceremony, participants from Maitum placed over-all 2nd runner-up, Maasim was awarded over-all 1st runner-up, and Malapatan bagged the over-all champion of Musabaqah 2018.

Asma Akmad of the Governor’s Commission on Moro Affairs pointed out that “for nine years, the main objective of Musabaqah is basically to increase the camaraderie between and among the mulits, the facilitators, and of course the stakeholders.”

She added that this event was important especially for all the Moro children and youth, who are considered to be more vulnerable to violence and extremism, citing why they were educated to be able to know what is right from wrong.

Ustad Laguialam left a message to all the mulits, where he said that “sana lahat ng sumali sa Musabaqah ay makakuha ng mga leksyon at maging sport lang sa mga competitions, kasi meron talagang mananalo at matatalo.”

He also said that Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon’s support has no discrimination and is given equally to all Sarangans, and the tri-people. (sarangani communications service)
