SURIGAO City – The 20th Siargao National Surfing Cup kicked off yesterday with 96 Filipino surfers from different parts of the country competing for this year’s top spot and a chance to climb the ladder on the top spots in the national ranking.

The event, sanctioned by Philippine Surfing Championship Tour (PSCT) and the country’s first-ever annual professional surfing competition, will show new surfing talents from 10 regions and competing in the world famous “Cloud 9” in General Luna town, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte up to Sept. 27.

For the first time in history, the Siargao National Surfing Cup includes a Junior category for the 18-and-under surfers in addition to the existing Men’s Shortboard Open category.

Ferina Santos, digital and PR head of PSCT, this year’s roster boasts of  Borongan Eastern Samar surfer Daemiel Erzbet Argame in the Juniors Category as a new addition to the event, which already includes surfers from Zambales, La Union, Baler, Ilocos Norte, Manila, Cantilan, Catanduanes, Davao Oriental, and Siargao.

Santos said PSCT  invited the Asian Surf Cooperative to sanction the event. They will be utilizing the Live Heat scoring system that allows anyone with a smartphone, tablet or laptop with internet connection to follow each heat score and view all the heat draws and results.

Joseph Olin, PSCT contest director, said the Siargao National Surfing Cup is one of the longest running surfing competitions in the country.
