ACT Teachers Representatives Antonio Tinio and France Castro strongly condemned the series of bombings in Lianga, Surigao del Sur prompting Lumad communities to evacuate their lands which prompted Lumad access to their farms and food that has been restricted by military checkpoints.

According to reports by the Save Our Schools Network and Alternative Learning Center for Agriculture and Livelihood Development, Inc, there had been a series of bombings and harassment since Dec. 31, 2018 in the communities of sitios Decoy and Panukmoan by the 75th Infantry Battalion that prompted the residents of Sitios Decoy and Panuk-moan to evacuate to Sitio Manluy-a.

The latest report was on Jan. 21 where 55 families evacuated to Sitio Km. 9, Brgy. Diatagon in Lianga. The 55 families are composed of 300 individuals from sitios Manluy-a, Panukmoan and Decoy; 61 learners and 2 volunteer teachers of Panukmoan Community Learning Center and 35 learners and 2 teachers of Manluy-a Community learning Center, alternative learning centers run by Tribal Filipino Program of Surigao del Sur.

“As Congress deliberates on the bill lowering the minimum age of criminal responsibility, government forces in Mindanao have been carrying out military operations and bombings in Lumad communities and schools which have forced the Lumad communities to evacuate their lands,” Tinio said. (pr)
