IN a recent TV interview, Bruno Mars showed to the host his humble beginnings. The house they had then is now roofless and an abandoned place where trees and plants have grown. The host asked how it was for him and his family to live there, and he said, “We had it all. We had each other.”

I’m wishing he still feels the same way especially now that he has become rich and famous.

The worst scenario for an evacuee from Marawi is for his family to be not there with him, if some of them are still trapped in the areas of conflict within the besieged city.

The question on when the siege will end, grows stronger each day as it keeps on going and going and going like an Energizer Bunny on a perpetual sugar rush. And as if to rub it in, superhero movies have been or will be showing in theaters near you, but with the fictional characters unable to help Marawi. Napakasakit, Kuya Eddie.

The millennials must be wondering, Kuya who? It’s the title of a song. And that’s all I would say about it.

But there are many things we can say about superheroes. Wonder Woman, for one, was once a mermaid! There’s this scene where Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) is lying on the beach, and Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) looks at him and says, “You’re a man.” Trevor then replies, “Yeah. I mean, do I not look like one?”

Well, it was her first time to see a man after living since birth in Themyscira, an island filled with Amazonas. Or it’s because she’s a mermaid and…

Way back in 2009, Gadot starred in a production number in Israel, dressed as a singing and dancing mermaid. That must be the reason behind the excitement in her eyes upon seeing a new-found discovery: “You’re a man.”

Being a mermaid was of course one of the steps along Gadot’s long and winding road to superstardom. Success stories seldom happen overnight, with YouTube sensations even required to post as many videos as they could before someone can help them level up to a semblance of Hollywood.

And her road to the lean-and-mean Wonder Woman physique took six months to develop, by training six to seven hours per day. This is for one who was a military combat trainer in the Israel Defense Forces. Her military training wasn’t enough? Whew!

In case you’re not yet convinced of her versatility, she was Miss Israel and even joined the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

And in case that’s still not enough to convince you she’s indeed the Wonder Woman, she was five-months pregnant while filming reshoots for the movie. Wow. That’s for her second daughter. Her eldest is now six years old.

There have been and will be many superhero movies this year aside from “Wonder Woman.” There’s “Justice League,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Logan,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “The Lego Batman Movie,” “Guardians,” “Captain Underpants,” “Batman and Harley Quinn,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” All of these with superheroes who are always ready to help the oppressed. Make you wish there are indeed superheroes in real life, but these all fictional characters in comic books that our younger brothers used to collect.

We watched “Wonder Woman” at SM CDO Downtown Premier’s Director’s Club. I figured, this could be the only movie I would ever watch there because it’s worth the, uh, ticket cost. The challenge was to not fall asleep while lying on the comfy seat, with a bowl of yummy aka free popcorn on my chest.

SM Downtown recently opened its fifth floor with at least 11 restos to choose from, the new haven for foodies. That’s in addition to its other restos like Burger King which has been attracting long lines since it opened. Whoopee!

Homegrown restos like Bigby’s are there, too. Baby back ribs pa more.

Sating gastronomic cravings, watching movies, feasting on popcorn—these are some of the things we take for granted while living in a peaceful world. And we pray that peace will continue to reign in Cagayan de Oro, and that it will soon reign, too, in Marawi.
