SURIGAO City — Surigao City Mayor Ernesto Matugas ordered the City Engineering and Architectural Office to conduct physical assessment of all buildings in the city damaged by the 6.7 earthquake that hit this port city of Caraga Friday evening.

The Surigao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council reconvened yesterday morning with all stakeholders for response, rescue, and damages assessment.

Meanwhile in a report by Engr. Emerson Salas of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) to Ttransportation Secretary Arturo Tugade repair of the damaged portion of the Surigao Airport runway will cost P73 million and repair would take 30 days.

Tugade and Caap Director-General Jim Sydiongco inspected the Surigao Airport late afternoon Sunday and again early yesterday morning.

Caap Area Center 13 manager Evangeline Daba said the earthquake that struck Surigao City Friday evening partially damaged the concrete 1,700-meter runway 18/36 of Surigao City Airport.

In another development, six bridges in Surigao have cracks but Department of Public Works and Highways-Caraga Region said it already took immediate action. Roads that also have cracks are the Surigao-Davao Coastal Road, Magpayang-Mainit Wharf Road, Surigao-San Juan Costal Road, Surigao Wharf Road.

Damaged bridges located within Surigao del Norte and Surigao City were Malico Bridge, only one lane passable so far to light vehicles with depressed approach damaged concrete railings. (Ben Serrano)
