“All the rice farmers of Tagum City will be given seeds at no cost,” he said. To date, Dawa said, the city has about 390 hectares of rice farms.

According to him, the city government wanted to help these farmers in order for them to develop and produce good quality of rice. He said his office gets a budget of P22 million this year and included in their priority programs are the rice and corn production project.

Also included in the program is the operation of nursery, vegetable farming support, multi-species hatchery equipment and farm mechanization. Dawa also said that they are into sweet corn production in the city-owned 10-hectare area in Barangay Madaum where landless farmers are allowed to use the land for free for sweet corn production.

The sweet corn production is doing good and has a ready market and is being handled by the Madaum Vegetable and Sweet Corn Farmers Association (MVSCFA).

MVSCFA president Bonifacio Montilla said they were organized five years ago with only eight (8) members and over the years, the number increased to 45.

He said they were allowed to farm an area of 1,300 sq. m. and with a kilo of seedlings at P2.5 kilo, they earn P25,000 in 70 days. The sweet corn products are supplied to major supermarkets in the cities of Tagum and Davao. (PNA) subsidy
