TEDDY Boy Locsin is a breath of fresh air. Not because he is always right (he is often not) but because he manages to act like a child despite the high position and regard he has been afforded by society. Just very recently, Teddy Boy again made headlines with his controversial remarks about UN Special Rapporteur on Extra Judicial Killings, Agnes Callamard’s “unofficial” visit to the country. I am not certain whether or not Locsin made any explanation as to why he thinks Callamard was wrong in coming to the courtry, but I am very sure that he does not think well of Callamard or more particularly, her appearance. In a statement, Locsin said in reference to the UN Rapporteur, “I was right after all and people thought I was flippant: never argue with people who don’t shower at least twice a day. It clears the mind.”

This kind of statements remind us that people never really grow up inside despite what positions we may achieve in life. And truth be told, it tickles our funny bone when someone dares to shed his adult mask and act like the real child that he is. Many of us cannot do that in fear of losing the stature we have reached and built up for many years. What makes this even funnier is that Teddy Boy Locsin is the current Philippine Ambassador to the United Nations. Unlike Gina Lopez and Perfecto Yasay, he was actually confirmed by the Commission on Appointments!

I, too, am not a fan of Agnes Callamard. I don’t appreciate it when foreigners impose their hypocritical moral standards upon the Filipino people. I personally believe we have had our fair share of foreign occupation and dominance for the last several hundreds of years and that we should be allowed to sort out our laundry before the white guys take over. I however am not prepared to criticize Callamard for her appearance, and for doing just that Teddy Boy Locsin ought to be rewarded with a golden star sticker on his forehead.

Teddy Boy is a very smart politician though, we have to give him that. He knows exactly what to say in order to make the headlines and continue to appear to be relevant. The issue about Callamard’s coming over to the Philippines in an “unofficial” visit is disfavored by a majority of Filipinos not because she violated protocol. Honestly, who actually knows and cares about foreign diplomatic procedures? The real reason is that Duterte still enjoys an “Excellent” trust rating, at least according to the latest survey conducted by the Social Weather Station (SWS), and Callamard has been openly criticizing him. Callamard’s mere presence in the country therefore is enough to irk Duterte’s legion of supporters. Teddy Boy hit the target by leaving out any formal or legal explanation on why he is against Callamard’s visit and going straight for her grungy appearance. “Kulang sa paligo!” in Tito Sotto’s language I would presume, minus the air of sexism that the comic senator always seems to exude.

Callamard’s insisted visit to the country was wrong on many levels, but Teddy Boy Locsin has captured it in the best way possible. People simply hate Callamard for being apparently anti-Duterte and there is simply no more childish and baseless way of pointing that out than in calling her filthy. Sometimes I fret at how shallow our political arguments have become. But sometimes it is also a breath of fresh air to have someone disregard political correctness and simply throw a slice of pizza at someone’s face. That is Teddy Boy Locsin. A man who never fails to live up (or down) to his name. Someone we could always have use for in our team.
