“THE Day After Valentine’s” is not exactly a love story. Well, it is. But not the usual way a love story evolves. Unlike the real story of KathNiel—Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla—who finally admitted they’ve been in a relationship for five years now. And somehow the skeptical and cynical Pinoy suspects the revelation is for their movie, “The Hows of Us,” which is now showing in theaters near you.

A love team can be so corny. Of course, it’s for publicity, with the real relationship hidden from the madlang pehpohl. But tell that to the avid fan who’s always kilig to the bones, swooning over the possibilities.

These love teams have to pretend to love each other in the pretend world that their fans believe in.

“Crazy Rich Asians” (CRA), however, is closer to truth than fiction. Its fabulously wealthy characters, upon learning that Nick Young’s (Henry Golding) girlfriend is Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), begin a worldwide search on the rich family she belongs to. When they couldn’t find a Rachel Chu in their exclusive circle, they try changing the spelling of her surname, some of which must be familiar to the Chinoy. But they still couldn’t find her.

Oliver T’sien (Fil-Am actor Nico Santos) says he’s the “poor relations” to the Young family, and again there’s the Chinoy who can relate with this.

I haven’t read Kevin Kwan’s books, so, I had no expectations whatsoever on how the characters should look like. Which was refreshing—the movie became a pleasant surprise for me. Usually, the book is better than the movie, thus, disappointing the book’s fans. CRA’s film version has been receiving great reviews, though.

Great movies are always coming to a theater near you, thus, watching them is still one of life’s simple pleasures, that is, if that’s the only thing you’ll do at the mall. But add a hotdog, popcorn and diet soda to that, plus lunch or dinner, plus some shopping, and a movie can regress into a hard habit to break.

Waiting for the next movie of JC Santos and Bela Padilla may also become a hard habit to break, thanks to the recent “Valentine’s” and their first movie, “100 Tula Para Kay Stella,” which was shown last year. I did expect much from their second film because, well, future projects are supposed to be better, after having learned a lesson or two with the first one.

It’s like switching to a plant-based diet after some bad episodes with meat and eggs. Live and learn.

Yes, plant-based is now the preferred term in lieu of vegan and vegetarian. Impossible Foods CEO Pat Brown said, “For many people, their notion of a vegan is someone who’s wagging a finger at them if they eat any animal products. I’m vegan. But for a lot of people that term—it’s almost like a cult.”

Vegetarian and vegan don’t mean the same thing. The former is merely a meatless diet; the latter excludes meat, dairy and eggs.

A friend’s advice for those who want to travel is not exactly to have a plant-based diet. She says, Stop eating out—not only to save money but also to lose weight. Thus, you’ll have a travel budget and look slim in vacation photos.

Another advice for savings is to maintain a simple lifestyle even while savoring financial success. That’s the secret of the truly rich Asian.

It’s all about priorities—“Para kanino ka bumabangon,” as that coffee television ad asks.

On Aug. 28, the Cagayanon’s reply to that could be the lechon. It was fiesta time and not even the resolve to have a plant-based diet could stop him from having a bite or many of the fiesta’s centerpiece. It was the day for the fiesta fan to judge if the lechon he was eating was the best one ever. The younger the pig, the better it tastes. A man, whose mid-life crisis is encouraging him to have a trophy girlfriend, can also relate with this—the only difference is, he’s not pining for Miss Piggy but for Barbie.

But what could make a genuine Cagayanon out of you is braving the uptown traffic on Tuesday night to watch the Higalaay Pyrofest at the uptown SM. Never in my wildest dreams had I ever planned to watch this live. I don’t usually go out of the house during the fiesta week, but there I was, celebrating the fiesta from lunch to 12 midnight! Oh, my. Definitely a fiesta hangover the day after.
