MY idea of team building is the typical “happy hour” where work buddies gather around a table boozing the hours away whilst talking and chitchatting about life, or the ladies having afternoon tea with some juicy gossip to waste the time away. So, when I heard our Club was going to have a teambuilding session, I had mixed emotions about it and asked myself, “What for? Why don’t we just go to a bar and get it over with!?”

Well, we were really going to do this. The Rotary Club of Kalayaan Cagayan de Oro’s first ever team building since being chartered in 1999. And it happened at Apple Tree, Opol, Misamis Oriental on August 31, 2015! Yes, months ago. But we now want to look back to that day when most of us were young and free and…

Our facilitator was our newly inducted member Maria Christina “Tina” Itchon Concepcion. I might add that this lady knows her stuff! She was able to tone down a “jolly” and almost “hyperactive” bunch into collaboratively working together. The Club is comprised of many diverse members and all have a very busy lifestyle, and being able to “reveal thy self” and at the same time learn things about the others is a really great way of building a real team!

As a first-timer, I joined the team building with an open heart and mind. I wanted to absorb every little detail. Taking time out of my chaotic schedule anyway was kind of my breather. I personally learned the true meaning of empathy. Being able to understand the other individuals’ past and now, really humbled me.

Learning my co-club members’ innermost thoughts, struggles and emotions made me respect them even more. What you don’t have, you can’t give. You cannot inspire kindness if you cannot give kindness. And being in a prestigious club of “Service Above Self,” we cannot be of service if we don’t have a giving heart. I feel one cannot be a true Rotarian if one is not happy, because kindness comes from being happy, right?

I learned so much about myself. I guess I am a happy person because I love what we do in our Club which we call Team Kalayaan! Yes, go on and define me by my team!
