SURIGAO City – Three groups here and abroad collaborated in order to provide a state-of-the-art potable water filtration system to a coastal village in San Francisco, Surigao del Norte.

The project, a collaboration between Disaster Aid Australia,  Balay Mindanao Foundation Inc., and the Junior Chamber International-Surigao turned over the Skyhydrant water filtration system on Thursday. It can produce 17 thousand liters of potable water a day using a fine microfiber system that has a 10-year lifespan.

Charlito Manlupig, Balay Mindanao founder and president, said the project was conceptualized right after the February 2017 earthquake that had San Franscisco, Surigao del Norte as the epicenter.

Manlupig said the project would greatly help the community that has long been in need of free potable water supply.

“This filtration system is one of the best, and can filter the dirtiest water you can find. The result is cleaner than the commercial mineral water available,” said Manlupig, calling it “a gift from our partners in Australia.”

The water filtration system costs around P200 thousand per unit.

Manlupig said Balay Mindanao’s partners, including the JCI in Barangay Banbanon, helped a lot.

Roel Catoto, JCI-Surigao project chairman, said he hoped the projecy would be replicated in different communities, especially in the far-flung areas where it needed most.

Catoto said that from now on, Banbanon residents won’t be drinking murky water during rainy season, and the filtration system would help prevent the spread of water-borne diseases. (Erwin Mascariñas)
