Letter to the Editor

THE social media has it.

The newspaper has it.

In the television, the talk shows, the morning, afternoon and evening shows—it is the most trending topic…

Congressman Manny Paquiao on Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender Community.

In all honesty, I do not see any logic why this topic should be trending, should be the talk of the town and should the venue where people waste time, effort and neurons.

For me, there are far more important issues that need the attention of the Filipino people. Issues that concerns the entire country and citizenry not just the LGBT community.

Do not get me wrong, I might be subject of future criticisms but this is my opinion. I respect those who belong to LGBT because I have friends and family who are also members of the community. I love them, and I respect them as a person.

If and if Pacquiao’s comment and opinion are against the law that summons condemnation, we should see what the law has set. Section 4, Article III of the Philippine Constitution states every Filipino’s freedom of speech and expression, in this case, Pacquiao was asked his opinion on LGBT and he answered. Basically, those were just his own and personal position on the matter.  He might just be too harsh and insensitive with the words he used, but then again, it is his own expression.

On the same sex marriage. We have to accept it, and what Pacquiao has said is the truth. Article 1 of the Family code defines marriage as a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life. It is the foundation of the family and an inviolable social institution whose nature, consequences, and incidents are governed by law and not subject to stipulation, except that marriage settlements may fix the property relations during the marriage within the limits provided by this Code (Family Code). In this sense, marriage is only exclusive to a man and a woman, not a man and a man nor a woman and a woman.

If one has said that Pacquiao is not worthy of the vote of the LGBT community because of his opinion, well lo and behold, such propaganda is not needed for the public to see the reality. Those people vying positions in Senate should have balls, mind and intelligence to draft and craft laws for the public because it is their basic responsibility so as those who are in the House of Representatives or the congressmen. The voting public are more intelligent than what these LGBTs are trying to imply.

This issue should be done and get over with the moment that video was released. I reiterate, this issue is not important at all.

If those intelligent and brilliant minds who talked back, bashed and criticized Pacquiao on his opinion would just instead divert their focus and at least give their opinion, position or even criticism on issues like poverty, insurgency, security, economy and all other pressing issues, then the social media, the newspaper and the television shows would be far more interesting. Plus, it would really be a great help to our country.

Why don’t we just move on and redirect our focus? Redirect to the most important and more pressing issues that are tantamount to “life and death” situations. Point blank.– Kenny France Capindot, kennyfranzkie@gmail.com
