IT’S May. How time flies. But time was probably not as fast for US White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders who was among those roasted two Saturdays ago by Michele Wolf at the White House Correspondents’ dinner which US President Donald Trump chose to miss for the second consecutive year.

We could almost see Sanders’ thought bubble—Get me outta here!—as Wolf said, “I think she’s very resourceful. Like, she burns facts, and then she uses the ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Like, maybe she’s born with it; maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies.”

In the end, White House Correspondents’ Association President Margaret Talev said, “The association by tradition does not preview or censor the entertainer’s remarks. Some of them made me uncomfortable and did not embody the spirit of the night.”

Trump, of course, tweeted the morning after: “Everyone is talking about the fact that the White House Correspondents Dinner was a very big, boring bust. The so-called comedian really ‘bombed.’ ” By Sunday night, he tweeted again: “The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was a failure last year, but this year was an embarrassment to everyone associated with it. The filthy ‘comedian’ totally bombed (couldn’t even deliver her lines—much like the Seth Meyers weak performance). Put Dinner to rest, or start over!”

Both Meyers and then US President Barack Obama roasted Trump at the 2011 dinner which the latter attended. Yup, Trump was there, listening. Talk of awkward.

In The Washington Post’s “I sat next to Donald Trump at the infamous 2011 White House correspondents’ dinner” written by Roxanne Roberts, she recalled the birth of Trump’s desire to be president.

Roberts wrote that “a handful of armchair psychoanalysts —reporters for major news organizations, no less—have decided that it all began at the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where Trump was the butt of jokes by President Obama and ‘Saturday Night Live’ comedian Seth Meyers. Trump was so humiliated by the experience, they say, that it triggered some deep, previously hidden yearning for revenge.”

She also cited a comment from The New York Times: “That evening of public abasement, rather than sending Mr. Trump away, accelerated his ferocious efforts to gain stature in the political world.”

Oh. So, should we blame Obama and Meyers for accelerating Trump’s “revenge”?

A year ago, in May 2017, it was Kathy Griffin who faced a backlash for tweeting a photo of her holding Trump’s “severed head.” It also ended her friendship with Anderson Cooper who at that time tweeted, “For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.”

For about a decade, Cooper and Griffin co-hosted CNN’s live coverage of the New Year’s Eve celebrations at Times Square in New York. Those were fun days, with Griffin taking her clothes off in icy cccccold weather.

Griffin did apologize to the madlang pehpohl for the “severed head” but retracted through an interview with BBC World News’ Hard Talk last November: “I’m not sorry. I take the apology back 1,000 percent.”

It has been proven that Griffin won’t be the last comedian to prop up Trump’s reign as a meme target. Still, South Korea President Moon Jae-in did say that “President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize. What we need is only peace.” Moon also said last January that Trump “deserves big credit for bringing about the inter-Korean talks. It could be a resulting work of the U.S.-led sanctions and pressure.”

Trump winning the Nobel Peace Prize is a phenomenon that even he probably doesn’t expect as he’s now in the middle of hushing a storm called Stormy Daniels. And all along we thought the story behind former US President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky would be the last presidential sex scandal. Not!

Meanwhile, President Rody Duterte has noticed the two Koreas’ breaking news: “Naging idol ko tuloy siya, si Kim Jong Un.”

So, what’s the lesson behind all these? Hmmm. “Weather-weather lang,” as former President Erap Estrada said once upon a time.

And as promised by Pag-asa that the rain would make a comeback in the first week of May, it was indeed raining cows and carabaos last Wednesday. It was a welcome respite from the scorching summer heat.
