Valencia City – The City Agriculture Office formally opened the celebration of Farmers Month with the aim to continue strengthen the farming community in the city through partnership and effective service delivery.

Ms. Connie L. Dalangan, Acting City Agriculturist, highlighted the importance of the event which pays tribute to the farmers and their contribution to the city.

Dalangan said that the City Agriculture Office has been offering their services and programs as well as interventions to address the needs and concerns of the farmers and for them to increase their productivity and income.

She highlighted that the city has accumulated 23 units of farm machineries that can be used and availed by the farmers anytime they need.

Dalangan even thanked the Department of Agriculture Regional Office X for their support and prompt response on giving interventions to the farmers of Valencia City.

Engr. Roxana Hojas, Assistant Regional Director for Operations, congratulated the city government for having such celebration and for valuing the contribution of the farmers.

Hojas encouraged the city government and farmers to prepare and help counter climate change as it has a direct effect to agriculture.

As part of the preparation, the regional office of the Department of Agriculture turned-over units of farm machineries to the city government that include a tractor and a combined harvester.

Hojas said that such machineries can help farmers prepare for climate change and aid their production.

Hon. Camilo E. Pepito, Committee Chair on Agriculture, said that farmers should not only focus on the production of agricultural products but also consider its marketing. He sighted that Valencia City is one of the leading exporters of grains supplied in the region.

On the other hand, City Councilor Glenn P. Peduche, author of the city ordinance creating the Farmers Month Celebration, said that the city will continue to celebrate Farmers Month which entirely dedicated to honor and thank the hardworking farmers of the city.

Peduche encouraged the farmers to shift on organic farming as it promotes ecologically sound, socially acceptable, economically viable and technically feasible production of food.

He added that there is already an ordinance giving incentives to farmers who practice such method of farming.

Based on the City Organic Agriculture Code, farm practitioners will be provided discount on Real Property Tax of ten percent (10%) for every hectare dedicated to Organic Agriculture.

As part of the month-long celebration, the City Agriculture Office together with the City Veterinary Office will conduct series of seminars on rice, corn and livestock production.

Further, the city government through the support of Mayor Azucena P. Huervas assured to provide more support to the farmers through different programs and services. (Aron Apostol Rempohito)
