The Valencia City Nutrition Committee conducted a 2-day seminar on Philippine Integrated Management on Acute Malnutrition (PINAM) recently.

The seminar focused on the management of acute malnutrition and improvement of the survival of children under 5 years old nationwide through evidence-based, effective, and life-saving interventions to prevent and treat acute malnutrition.

Mr. Selahuddin Yu Hashim, MDM, Executive Director of Empowering Solutions, served as the resource speaker and highlighted the importance of combating malnutrition in the country.

“Malnutrition is a public health concern,” Mr. Selahuddin Yu Hashim said, adding that the Local Government Units should respond and extend its services to prevent malnutrition.

One of the reasons of malnutrition is the inadequate dietary intake of food which is common to children in areas affected by povert.

In the country, several interventions have been made to prevent malnutrition. This includes the launching of the first-ever national guidelines on the management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) for children under 5 years old of the Department of Health and Unicef.

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) joined this milestone being the co-lead of the PIMAM.

During the seminar, the members of the City Nutrition Committee and the personnel from the City Nutrition Office were informed about the types and reasons of malnutrition.

The participants were also taught on the criteria for identifying children with severe acute malnutrition for treatment, criteria for inpatient or outpatient care and on areas where Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) treatment is implemented.

Mr. Selahuddin Yu Hashim also highlighted the strong commitment of the city on its health and nutrition programs.

The seminar aims to improve the awareness and knowledge of the members of the City Nutrition Committee to effectively manage the malnutrition in the city.

The Valencia City Nutrition Committee chaired by City Mayor Hon. Azucena P. Huervas assured to further strengthen their services and programs and improve the nutrition situation of the city.

The city garnered the 2nd year Crown Maintenance Award and this year, the city is aiming for the Nutrition Honor Award.
