Cagayan de Oro City – Vice Governor Joey G. Pelaez recently attended the 5th Division Management Committee Meeting with Misamis Oriental Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Cherry Mae Limbaco, Assistant Superintendent Jean Velso, education supervisors and administrators from different schools in Lugait to Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental and Gingoog City. The Management Committee Meeting is conducted so that different ideas and points of view be discussed and solutions to problems can be agreed.  The consolidated suggestions and concerns from different schools will be used to enhance the services that each school gives to its students.

Popularly known as Champion of Education, Vice Governor Pelaez gave updates on his advocacies and activities aimed at helping the teaching and non-teaching personnel of DepEd. In his report, Vice Governor Pelaez presented to the teachers his Resolution supporting the pending legislative measures for salary increase of the teaching and non-teaching personnel and the Resolution strongly supporting the lowering of Income Tax in the Philippines. Being cognizant of the plight of our teachers and non-teaching personnel, the Vice Governor believes that is timely to upgrade the present minimum salary for public school teachers in the elementary and secondary schools from PhP 18,549 to PhP 25,000 a month and and for non-teaching personnel from PhP9,000 to PhP 15,000 a month. He also strongly supports the Income Tax Reform Bill filed by Senator Sonny M. Angara. He said that it is an effective, receptive and tangible mechanism to help our constituents, comprising mainly of working class, to have more dispensing power on their hard-earned income, apart from regularly paying their monthly tax, and to effect further inclusive growth.

Vice Governor Pelaez likewise updated them on the continued operation of Bukidnon State University – External Studies Centers. Vice Governor Pelaez passionately fought for the continuation of BSU-ESCs operations, saying that the operation of the BSU-ESCs in Misamis Oriental is a laudable and tangible poverty reduction program as it provides tertiary education to poor people and families living under the poverty level in various municipalities in the province.

In addition, Vice Governor Pelaez also wrote a Resolution on A Happy Reading and Writing Habit Program. Since 2013, a significant number of quality books of assorted titles and subjects have been distributed to eighty-nine (89) public elementary and secondary schools in Misamis Oriental by the Office of the Vice Governor in partnership with Children International Philippines Incorporated (CIPI).

Lastly, Vice Governor Pelaez expressed his strong support for the implementation of K to 12 Basic Education Program of DepEd. He strongly believes that it is high time for the country to fully embrace the K-to-12 Basic Education Program to enable our young people to compete in the global and international stage with world-class competencies, skills and values.
