THE city council suspended its session on Monday afternoon as the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency took urine samples from its members for drug tests.

Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin Uy, who submitted to a drug test, said it was their way of showing their support to President Duterte’s so-called war on drugs.

Uy said the drug tests among members and employees of the city council on Monday was just the start, adding that the PDEA would carry out more drug tests in other city hall departments and offices.

The mandatory drug test which started on Monday came after the city council approved a P1.2-million budget for the tests last week.

Uy said the budget would cover the costs of testing city hall’s over 4,000 employees.

Councilor Romeo Calizo meanwhile warned that local officials and employees who would refuse to be tested and those who would test positive for drug use face the risk of dismissal from service.

“Dili mahimo nga dili  magpa-drug test ang usa ka official o employee sa city hall kay mandatory man ni,” Calizo said. (nitz arancon)
