XAVIER University’s Social Development Office yesterday tentatively scheduled a forum on the proposed restoration of the death penalty tomorrow following Rep. Maximo Rodriguez’s announcement that he has accepted its offer for him to explain his vote in favor of the controversial bill.

Nestor Banuag, advocacy coordinator of Xavier’s Social Development Office (not Kristohanong Katilingban sa Pagpakabana as reported yesterday), said it started coordination and accessibility efforts to allow the city’s 2nd District representative and Rep. Rolando Uy of the 1st District to publicly state their positions on the Death Penalty Bill that was approved on third reading by the Lower House last week.

Banuag said the two Misamis Oriental representatives–Peter Unabia of the 1st District and Juliette Uy of the 2nd District–are welcomed to take part in the forum.

The Social Development Office said the forum would be held from 10 am to 12 noon, depending on the availability of the congressmen.

Banuag said the forum is being organized not only to inform the Xavier University community but people in Cagayan de Oro.

The Jesuitun university has joined those campaigning against the restoration of capital punishment in the country. Its president, Fr. Roberto Yap, led street demonstrations here against the proposed law last week, a day after the Lower House passed the bill on third reading. (nitz arancon)
