The City Fire District office said the Malasag grass fire was reported at around 2:30 pm, and fire fighters rushed to the area. By 5 pm, the situation was already under control.

Before it, the Cagayan de Oro City Fire District recorded 159 grass fires, rubbish fires, vehicular fires, electrical post fires, residential fires, and  commercial  establishment fires in the city, from March 1 to April 6.

SFO1 Charles Neri said local fire fighters have had their hands full since the start of the summer season.

“Almost everyday, fire breaks out in different barangay of the city,” he said.

Luz Mercado, a government weather specialist, said the summer or the dry season started in March 1 and would last until next month. The summer heat is being aggravated by the El Niño phenomenon. (nitz arancon)
