OVER a dozen public transport groups have declared their support for the reelection bid of Mayor Oscar Moreno, the leader of the National Confederation of Transport Unions (NCTU) in northern Mindanao said over the weekend.

Joel Gabatan, regional chairman of the NCTU, said 18 organizations under the NCTU have agreed to help Moreno win a reelection.

Gabatan’s announcement came even as leaders of two other public transport organizations–the Cagayan de Oro First Taxi Drivers’ Association (Cafitada) and the Federation of Motorela Operators and Drivers of Cagayan de Oro (Femodca)–said their groups were still undecided but may make a public endorsement soon.

While the strict implementation of City Ordinance 10551-2007 has become an issue among many drivers because of the stiff fines it provides against traffic law violators, Gabatan said it did not weigh much as far as the NCTU was concerned.

“Wala may mahimo si Mayor Moreno ana kay bala-od man kana. Mayor man siya, implementor man  siya sa bala-od,” said Gabatan.

Gabatan said those opposed to the stiff fines should convince the next city council to amend the city ordinance.

The NCTU endorsement was made known by Gabatan after Moreno faced his two challengers–Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of the city’s 2nd District and ex-mayor Vicente Emano–in a no-holds-barred public debate on Thursday.

During the face-off, Moreno, Rodriguez and Emano debated on the worsening vehicular traffic situation in the city.

Rodriguez criticized Moreno over city hall’s failure to decongest the streets despite a P91-million loan to pay for new traffic lights and CCTV cameras.

Moreno said it was Emano who secured a P91-million loan for the modern traffic light  system. He said he looked into the project when he assumed office in 2013.

Emano, for his part, said the contract for the traffic lights and everything were in order when he stepped down in 2013.
