BUTUAN City — They are supposed to be role models and spearhead public information drive on the harmful effects of illegal drugs in their communities but on Friday, 21 government workers, two barangay chairpersons, and 10 barangay councilors surrendered to authorities implementing Operation TokHang and Oplan Double Barrel, authorities said over the weekend.

“Actually they are among the 1,121 illegal drug personalities who turned themselves in en massé, in the presence of Agusan del Sur Mayor Nida Manpatilan. I was actually surprised that 12 barangay officials and 21 (local government) employees of Esperanza approached us and confessed they wanted to be rehabilitated as they wanted to reform,” Espeanza, Agusan del Sur town Chief of Police Senior Insp. Lucio Datahan told Gold Star Daily in a phone interview on Sunday.

Datahan added he was also surprised at the number of government employees who confessed being hooked into illegal drugs.

Manpatilan, for her part, said individual assessment would be conducted soon for the self confessed shabu users so they could undergo appropriate drug rehabilitation regimen.
