THE Fourth Infantry Divisioin (4ID), based here in the city, belied the statement of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines that they willfully ‘red-baited’ one of its veteran members.
On Friday, the NUJP issued a statement condemning 4ID and 401st Infantry Brigade commander Col. Alexander Macario, in particular, for resorting to red baiting, harassment and endangering NUJP’s former chairperson, Inday Espina-Varona, “in an attempt to discredit her for her enterprising journalism.”
The 4ID issued a statement quoting Macario questioning Espina-Varo-na’s supposed accusation of soldiers for the Nov. 12 burning of the teachers’ cottage of the Alternative Learning Center for Agricultural and Livelihood Development campus in Barangay Padiay, Sibagat, Agusan del Sur.
In a phone interview over the weekend, 4ID spokesperson Capt. Patrick Martinez said it was not their intention to endanger or tag the veteran journalist of being a member of the New Peo-ple’s Army.
“Our advisory was a response to what she posted on her social media that we thought was not fair. It did not have our side of the incident. It was meant to reach out to the public who read her post on social media. It was not intended to vilify her,” Martinez said adding they tried to comment on her Facebook page but they were “blocked.”
