BUTUAN City – Five people died while three others were badly hurt in a road accident involving a pick-up truck and a sport utility vehicle on the highway in Alegria town in Surigao del Norte on Friday afternoon.

Authorities identified the dead as Brylle Viray, 19; Joe Basil Viray, 22; Joseph Evan Arbis, 55; and Max Russel Bayutas, 15, of Barangay Obrero, Butuan City; and Donafel Granada, 20, of Barangay Curbada, Bayugan City.

Rushed to the Butuan Doctors Hospital were  Yul Arbis and his child Yul Adrian, and Rusty Bayutas.

All of them were in a Mitsubishi Fuzion SUV that figured in the accident.

Two passengers of the other vehicle, a pickup truck, were rushed to the Caraga Regional Hospital, in Barangay Bad-as, Placer town, Surigao del Norte. The two, identified as Pastor Genegeo Mesias Mission, 52 years old, and Ricares Maluay Limbatao, 20, both from Gingoog City, sustained injuries.

Police said the SUV was driven by 43-year old Yul Abris while the pick-up truck, a Isuzu D-Max, driven by Manolito Cubelo Acuzar, 51, were moving towards Butuan City.

Investigators said the Acuzar tried to get past Abris’s vehicle, miscalculated and accidentally hit the side of the SUV. The impact made the SUV crash onto a mango tree.
