CITY police director Senior Supt. Nelson Aganon on Monday said he would create a new task force that to re-open the case on the Dec. 2, 2017 murder of University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines president Ricardo Rotoras.
Aganon revealed this after members of Rotoras’s family went to see him at the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office to inquire about the status of the case.
The Rotorases found out that authorities have indeed closed the case, and that the Task Group Rotoras was also dissolved following the arrest of a suspect, alleged gun-for-hire Johnreal Gamanay, in Makati in January.
Aganon told the Rotorases he would look into the way the task group handled the case.
“It (task group) should not be dissolved. There should be a continuing investigation even if a case was already filed in court,” Aganon was quoted as saying by Dr. Rotoras’s elder brother Eldie.
He said Aganon pointed out that the case should stay open in anticipation of more evidence.
Seven brothers and three sisters of Dr. Rotoras met with Aganon, and complained about how the police handled the murder case.
Dr. Rotoras’s elder brother Eldie said it was clear to them that Aganon was not informed that the Task Group Rotoras was already dissolved. He said Aganon was visibly was even surprised when he learned of this.
But Aganon, according to the elder Rotoras, explained the it could be due to the filing of a case against a suspect in court.
Aganon also pointed out that the head of the task group, Senior Supt. Roy Bahian, was already relieved from the Cocpo.
The elder Rotoras said Aganon did not identify members of the new task force that he was planning to create.
He said Aganon also assured that would look into the outcome of the investigation, summon a witness, and review the pieces of evidence.
The Rotoras siblings were assured that Aganon would write the National Bureau of Investigation in Manila to provide him a copy of its findings on the surveillance camera recording for review and for possible enhancement.
He said Aganon would also ask about what happened to the two cellular phones of the victim.
