A BROADCASTER was shot dead in the municipality of Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur, on Tuesday evening.

In an e-mailed statement, National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) chairman Ryan Rosauro said Elvis Ordaniza, in his fifties and a reporter for radio station DxWO Power99 FM based in Pitogo, succumbed to two bullet wounds in the chest.

The station is owned by  Times Broadcasting Network.

Ordaniza was attacked at around 7:10 pm Tuesday in Purok Bagong Silang, Barangay Poblacion.

Police said initial investigation showed a lone gunman shot Ordaniza while he was preparing food for his family’s dinner.

The gunman, who remained unidentified, fled.

Police said Ordaniza was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Ordaniza was known to be critical against illegal gambling activities and prohibited drugs.

Rosauro said a caliber .45 pistol was used in the killing.

According to colleagues, Ordaniza had been reporting about the problem of illegal drugs and illegal gambling in Pitogo, the NUJP reported.

The Zamboanga del Sur provincial police office has yet to determine if the killing is related to the May elections.

Supt. Michael Nicolas, police provincial director,  ordered a thorough investigation into the killing.

Nicolas’s order was addressed to Chief Insp. Orlyn Leyte, Pitogo police chief, after he received a report about Ordaniza.
