THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) is keeping an eye on a weather system that could further intensify and hit the country after typhoon “Nona.”

Pagasa weather specialist Luz Mercado said the state weather bureau spotted the tropical depression over the Pacific Ocean some 1,425 kilometers southeast of Mindanao at around 2 am.

The tropical system’s path is similar to 2012’s super typhoon Pablo’s, the strongest to make landfall in Mindanao. “Pablo” was a Category 5 super typhoon with winds of 280 km per hour.

Mercado said the tropical depression could follow the footsteps of typhoon “Nona,” and enter the Philippine area at around 2 pm today or tomorrow. If it does, Pagasa would call it typhoon “Onyok.”

Pagasa said Onyok could first hit Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

Mercado said the tropical depression could pick up more strength because of the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean.
