GAMBLING is among the oldest past times man has ever known. If done with routine persistence, however, it becomes a bad habit which not only affects one’s finances, but that of the entire household’s as well, compromising domestic relationships too.  In the hopes of addressing just that, recent efforts have been dedicated to curtail similarly habit-forming illegal gambling activities – particularly looking into their own personnel also.

Thus, the Police Regional Office in Region 10, through Supt. Lemuel B. Gonda, public information office /spokesperson and deputy chief of the Regional Police Strategy Management Unit of Police Regional Office 10, has recently issued a press release entitled “PRO 10 Intensifies Anti-Gambling Operations.”

It reads: “In line with the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte and PNP Chief PDG Ronald M dela Rosa under ‘Operation High Roller’ of PNP Anti-Illegal Gambling Campaign Plan, Police Regional Office 10 stepped up its anti-illegal gambling operations in the entire region. One of the directives from the National Headquarters is for police units to engage in the one time-big time operation on illegal gambling.

“PCSupt. Pacleb reiterates that after the revamp of officers in region 10, the ‘One Strike Policy,’ will be strictly enforced in the course of illegal gambling. Chief of police or station commander who ignore and failed to act on the blatant illegal gambling operations in their areas will be relieved from their posts immediately. We will also go after policemen who are protecting and engaging in illegal gambling operations.

“In our relentless operations, since January 01 to February 18 this year there were 42 anti-illegal gambling operations conducted that affects Small Town Lottery (illegal swertres), wherein 21 in Bukidnon Police Provincial Office; 11 in Lanao del Norte  PPO; four in Cagayan de Oro City Police Office; two in Camiguin PPO and Misamis Occidental PPO and one in Iligan City Police Office and Misamis Oriental PPO respectively.

“With these operations a total of 46 persons were arrested: wherein 21 in Bukidnon Police Provincial Office; 11 in Lanao del Norte  PPO; six in Misamis Occidental PPO; four in Cagayan de Oro City Police Office; two in Camiguin PPO and one in Iligan City Police Office and Misamis Oriental PPO respectively. A total of 41 cases filed in court against the arrested persons for violation of RA 9287 and a total of P24,858.00 bet money confiscated.

“Likewise, there were 23 other forms of anti-illegal gambling operations conducted that resulted to the arrest of 41 persons throughout the region. Wherein seven operations in cockfighting; four in tong-its; four in video karera, mahjong and fruit games/tolilong respectively. A total of 9,832.00 bet money, four fighting cocks, eight video karera machine and 8 fruit game/tolilong machine confiscated of the said anti-illegal gambling operations. A total of 8 cases filed in court against the arrested persons for violation of PD 1602 and three for case filing.

“With these accomplishments, PCSupt Timoteo Gascon Pacleb, Regional Director, commended the operating personnel for a job well done for their extreme efforts in anti-illegal gambling operations and to continuously conduct an efficient campaign and advocacy by implementing a wide –ranging pro-active approach/strategy in all forms of criminality in coordination with various law enforcement and other concerned government agencies.”
