CAGAYAN de Oro residents and their visitors who attended and will attend more fiesta-related activities in the next few days were advised to practice minimum public health protocols for their protection, the City Health Office said today.

“Given that this year marked the first face-to-face celebration of the city fiesta after two years of the pandemic, (the number of double-digit cases from July to August is evidence of a) mini-surge and we at the City Health Office (CHO) are concerned because starting last Sunday, there are scheduled events that are (potential) super-spreader events,” said Dr. Teodulfo Joselito Retuya Jr., CHO chief epidemiologist.

During Monday’s Covid-19 response press briefing, Dr. Retuya said the rise in Covid-19 cases isn’t unique in Cagayan de Oro City as there are more local governments in Luzon and the Visayas that experienced a surge in cases due to decreased compliance to health protocols.

From July 1 to Aug. 20 this year, the city logged 827 cases, Dr. Retuya said.

Despite these numbers, Cagayan de Oro City’s health risk indicators remain below the moderate level to keep itself within Alert Level 1 status from Aug. 16 to 31. As of Aug. 14, the city’s average health care utilization rate is pegged at 8.74 percent as both its intensive care unit (ICU) bed use and mechanical ventilator use are pegged at 4.76 percent and zero percent respectively.

Isolation bed use is at 21.48 percent which is still below moderate risk as of Aug. 14, data from Fassster Philippines of the Department of Health showed.

As of 10 pm yesterday, City Health Officer Dr. Rachel Dilla said their data showed that Cagayan de Oro City logged 18 new cases and 162 active cases of which 77 are admitted to the city’s private and public hospitals.

The rest or about 85 patients are confined in the city’s isolation facilities.

“This means that majority of the cases are mild while the 77 are moderate. Thankfully our recovery rate is still 90 percent so we are encouraging our people to complete their primary doses now and get their booster shots once available,” Dr. Dilla said.
