WITH her parents always around for morale support, Tagoloan lass Sara Dalagan went on to dominate the male-crowded PYAP junior chessfest held, over the weekend, at the Capitol Chess Park in Cagayan de Oro.

Developing her pieces well to either achieve a better middlegame position or reach a favorable endgame, Dalagan defeated Carlo Guylan of Claveria and Gerald Verana of Naawan in the last two rounds en route to a five-game sweep of the day-long tourney that earned her the top prize of P3,000 and the championship trophy.

“I don’t want to disappoint my parents, especially my mama Bella who is always by my side bisan asa nga torneyo ‘mi makaabot. Gapaningkamot gyod ko,” said Dalagan, a third year student or ninth grader at Tagoloan National High School in Tagoloan town, Misamis Oriental.

The fast-learning Dalagan received her cash award from no less than Misamis Oriental governor Peter Unabia and so the runner-up John Dale Salabsab of El Salvador City and Jonathan Bucio of Gingoog City who got P2,000 and P1,000, respectively, plus medals.

The culminating activity of the 48th Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines-Misamis Oriental Chapter was held last Friday night at the Capitol ground in Cagayan de Oro also attended by the new provincial sports director Francis Sean Condeza.

Kon mag permanente ang suporta sa chess daghan gyod ang ma develop nga players sa Misor province. And the youthful Dalagan is one among those who showed potential at this early stage,” said Fide National Arbiter Lorenzo Cuizon, who was assisted by his deputy arbiter NA Aldwin Daculan and club mainstays William Reintegrado, Allan Cantonjos, and Lyndon Lumancas in running the show.
