ABOUT 76,312 Kagay-anons consisting of children to seniors were vaccinated during the first 100 days of office of Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy, the City Health Office (CHO) said on Monday.

CHO national immunization program coordinator Dr. Ina Grace Chiu admitted during City Hall’s Covid-19 response press briefing that this number falls short of the targets set for the city by the Department of Health (DOH) under the agency’s ‘PinasLakas’ vaccination campaign.

“For now, we’ll continue with our vaccination until December 31 this year,” Dr. Chiu said.

Dr. Chiu said the first booster target for 12 years old and older during the PinasLakas period was set at 455,181 but they only managed to administer 31,027 booster shots or 42.89 percent.

“The target for seniors is 60,138 but during the PinasLakas period, there are 5,261 that were either unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated. From July 1 to the present, 272 were vaccinated and fully vaccinated seniors reached 81.7 percent,” she said.

For children aged five to 11 years old, the target was set at 71,432, and from July 1 to Oct. 15, about 36,138 of them were fully vaccinated or more than 50 percent, Dr. Chiu said.

Despite failing to reach the DOH’s PinasLakas targets, Cagayan de Oro City’s high vaccination rate of more than 81 percent sustained a steady decline in Covid-19 cases more than a month after the city fiesta celebration.

Last August, City Hall allowed full face-to-face fiesta core activities and F2F classes for school children for the first time in two years. Since then, Cagayan de Oro City logged single-digit cases daily while its active cases went down from triple digits to double digits.

As of 10 pm on Oct. 17, the CHO said the city logged one new case and 49 active Covid-19 cases.

The decline in cases came as City Hall maintained only one mega vaccination site in one mall and relegated the rest of its vaccination operations to the city’s barangay health centers.

“We still have lots of vaccines for our seniors and children aged five to 11 years old, until the end of the year. So we’re urging those who still remain unvaccinated to get vaccinated for free,” Dr. Chiu said. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
