IT is World Pizza Day tomorrow, February 9.

Each food group seems to have its Day now. National Croissant Day on January 30. National Donut Day is on June 2. International Coffee Day on October 1. World Pasta Day on October 25.

The national day may not be the same as the world/international day, giving the foodie more days to celebrate and more excuses to indulge. But what nation is the Day referring to when it says “national”? Hmmm.

But for the high-carb, it’s croissants, donuts, pasta, and coffee all day every day.

Meanwhile, the low-carb is feasting on lechon, steaks, and crispy pata.

National Lechon Day will be on June 11. National Steak Day will be on April 25. I Googled National Crispy Pata Day but found none.

Try to find out if your favorite food has a Day, too.

For this month, there’s Valentine’s Day to look forward to. All restos, cafes, stores, malls, hotels, and motels have begun advertising their promos for this most special event but the loveless low-carb would rather stay home and watch “Love Actually” over and over again while feasting on bacon bits and Rite ‘n Lite Cucumber.

These Days are not only meant to give us an excuse to celebrate. They’re also meant to revive the economy especially since the World Health Organization has not yet declared the end of the pandemic. It has been three years and people are still wearing face masks and having their second booster shots. Can’t we move forward already?

But the world has remained the same. Brownouts, er, blackouts, civil wars, corruption, floods, earthquakes, typhoons, volcanic eruptions, although that last one may mean something else on Valentine’s Day, first, there has to be an erection.

I remember watching “Avatar: The Way of Water” when the cinema suddenly had a series of blackouts one after the other—on, off, on again, off again, and this lasted for several minutes. The film sometimes continued to play sans audio, and we, the audience, ended up providing the dialogue. We were laughing so hard after realizing how fun it was to create our own script for the movie. What began as a source of annoyance morphed into a spontaneous bonding moment for all of us.

And then, there’s this story about Maria who came all the way from the boondocks to look for her aunt in the city. She began roaming around until Pedro noticed her and decided to take advantage of her innocence and ignorance. So, he approached her and asked, Kinsa imong gipangita?

Maria: Akong auntie.
Pedro: Ubanan nako ka sa radio station, mangayo ta’g tabang nila.

The wise Pedro then brought her to a motel and once they were alone in the room, he removed his clothes and asked her to also remove her clothes. And, of course, Pedro’s “microphone” was there, ready for her, and she immediately grabbed it and said, “Auntie! Naa ko diri sa radio station! Ganiha ra ko sige pangita nimo!”

And Pedro’s “microphone” suddenly went pfft, prompting Maria to say, “Ay! Brownout!”

I don’t remember how the exact joke goes but that’s its short version.

Many of our problems can be solved if only we have a Pedro to help us out. Haha.

The pandemic has taught us we don’t need a special Day to celebrate. We can always savor each day with coffee and whoever or whatever we want to pair that with, but no Pedro, please.
