The city council led by Vice Mayor Ruth Guingona has approved resolution during regular session on Tuesday passed by City Councilor Mike Paderanga asking Duterte  to allocate the amount of P200 million intended to rehabilitate the local coconut industry.

“The amout will be of big help to our local coconut farmers who are already reeling from low production after every harvest,” Paderanga said.

Gingoog has a total of 74,000 hectares of agricultural land, 40 % of which have been planted with coconuts, he said.

“Most of the planted coconut trees in the city are already 100 years old,” Paderanga added.

Paderanga said because of the dire situation the local coconut farmers are facing, the city government badly needs the amount to solved the problem.

Kinahanglan na usab ma rehabilitate ang coconut industry sa dakbayan tungod kay sobra na kakaraan,” Paderanga said

He said the coconut industry here is the main source of livelihood for most of the people.

Tungod sa pag kakaraan na sa mga lubi maoy hinungdan kadag-hanan na convert nalang ngadto sa coco lumber,” Paderanga lamented.

He said the requested amount will be taken from P60 billion coconut levy fund for Mindanao as ordered released by Duterte last Sept. 22.
