THE City Council committee on tourism chaired by Councilor Jay Pascual met yesterday to discuss the request of the City Tourism Council regarding the on-going road widening project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Barangay Bayanga.

Among the concerns that shall be raised is that the said project might endanger the historical and tourism well-being of the Macahambus Cave.

Furthermore, it was also hinted that a good portion of the cave will collapse due to the hollow ground beneath the cave.

In its previous meeting last Thursday, the project was being handled or implemented by the DPWH-10, as per information given by the representative of the DPWH-1st District Engineering Office who was present during the meeting.

Macahambus Cave is recognized as a historical site and protected under Republic Act 10066 and Republic Act 9072 which provides that caves and its resources shall be conserved, protected and managed as part of the country’s natural wealth.

A strong cooperation and exchange of information between governmental authorities shall be strictly observed particularly on matters pertaining to its protection and conservation, a representative from the City Historical and Cultural Commission suggested.

DPWH was also requested to bring the technical description of the road widening project.

Considering that pocket meetings have already been conducted, DPWH shall also be furnished copies of the minutes for their information.

Finally, DPWH was likewise requested to put on hold the construction work on the stretch of the road while the committee is still deliberating on the issue. (sp)
