BUTUAN City–Police on Sunday arrested an armed barangay chairman who reportedly tried to get near reelectionist Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr. while he was on a stage in Babag during a political rally.

The barangay chairman, Angelo Atupan, was allegedly armed with a caliber .45 pistol with eight bullets.

PO2 Bernard Amora of the Butuan City Police Station 2 said the 50-year old Atupan of Purok 1, Barangay Babag, has had a drink too many when he insisted om getting near Amante who was with Councilor Virgilio Neri and former congressman Roan Libarios.

Members of city hall’s Civil Security Unit stopped the barangay official.

Atupan, for his part, said all he wanted to do was congratulate Amante although he is a supporter of the campaign of the mayor’s challenger, Engr. Ronnie Vicente Lagnada.

Atupan was charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, and violation of Omnibus Election Code before City Prosecutor’s Office and the local Commission on Elections office.

He has been temporarily detained at presstime.
