The doctor, 40-year-old Charles Rainer Marquez, who hails from Iligan City, works as a medical officer at the city health insurance office. His arrest was an offshoot of a case for violation of the law on violence against women and children.

He was arrested based on a Nov. 4, 2019 warrant of arrest issued by Judge Anisa Umpa of the 2nd branch of the Regional Trial Court.

Marquez is presently under hospital arrest. His heart rate and blood sugar supposedly spiked after spending a day in jail.

In a phone interview on Sunday, Marquez denied hitting his partner who left him last December with their two children.

Dr. Marquez said he has been married for 11 years but he and his wife separated four months after they tied the knot. He said annulment proceedings are ongoing.

Marquez said he met his accuser, a nurse, in 2014 and they lived together and had two children in Iligan.

Somehow, he said, his partner got wind of his marriage, prompting her to leave him for good on Dec. 31, 2018.

“I didn’t want to tell her about it because I wanted my marriage to be annulled first so we could then get married,” he said.

“We’ve had our misunderstandings. It was a typical relationship with quarrels and arguments, but I never laid a hand on her,” Marquez said.

He said that while his partner has photos of herself bruised, “she has not obtained a medical certificate to prove it. She should know the process because she is a nurse.”

Marquez also denied allegations that he has not been supporting their children. He said he has receipts of purchases of items he bought for their children but these were rejected by his estranged partner.

What made the situation worse, he said, was that his partner sought the help of local politicians. He declined to elaborate.

Marquez said he was hoping that the truth would prevail but added that he was willing to have an out-of-court settlement.
