‘WHO should resign now? Me? or the slapping councilor?”

With this, Task Force Hapsay chairman Jose Edgardo Uy slammed back at Councilor Zaldy Ocon who called for his ouster on Monday, even as he laughed off the local legislator’s assertion that the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) has hired “unqualified” and “poorly trained” traffic aides under his watch.

Uy also said he would not force the issue if Mayor Oscar Moreno replaces him as city hall’s traffic czar on Ocon’s recommendation.

“If I’ll be replaced as overseer of the RTA, I will gladly accept that,” he said.

But Uy said only Moreno can decide on his fate, and not Ocon. He said was the mayor who appointed him.

“I would have kept my piece about this but there’s a limit to all patience,” said Uy, pointing out that Ocon’s call for his ouster was clearly an offshoot of a slapping incident that took place at the city council.

Uy said Ocon slapped traffic enforcer Ric Emmanuel Agustin, a day after the councilor was cited for a traffic violation near Cogon market.

Uy said he and RTA chief Nonito Oclarit witnessed the attack on Agustin.

“Now, if the slapping councilor wants me out, I’d  say, ‘Thank you… you’ve made my day,’” he said.

Ocon had neither confirmed nor denied that he slapped Agustin. But he accused the traffic aide of being discourteous and disrespectful when he confronted Agustin about the traffic citation. The councilor was issued a ticket for illegal parking near the corner of Yacapin and Guillermo streets.

Uy said it was Ocon who broke a traffic rule and who slapped a traffic aide, and not him.

He also brushed aside Ocon’s assertion that RTA has hired workers unfit to be traffic aides.

He said over 50 percent of RTA’s traffic law enforcers are holders of Criminology degrees.

“Is this what he meant by ‘unqualified and poorly trained’?” Uy asked rhetorically.
